Essays, practical resources and an evolving body of ideas.

Writing and resources

Writing is another way I pay attention to gardens: following what the seasons reveal, what practical work teaches, and how our understanding changes when we begin to see a garden as a living system.

Here you will find essays on soil, food, wildlife and stewardship, alongside reflections on the longer relationships between people and place. Some of my seasonal writing also appears in The Spark Magazine and The Sherborne Times.

The Living Gardens Starter Guide

The Living Gardens Starter Guide is a free introduction to observing and caring for a garden as a living system.

It brings together some of the central ideas behind my work, helping you look more closely at your own garden, understand what is already happening there and identify thoughtful first steps.

Selected writing

Three places to begin

These essays introduce some of the ideas that recur throughout my writing: learning to understand a place, intervening with care and recognising that every place is continually changing.

Seasonal essays and practical observations

All writing

Most of these essays begin with a particular moment of work: pruning an old fruit tree, sowing seeds, feeding the soil or watching a garden exceed the plans made for it.

From there, they explore the wider questions that gardens raise—about control and participation, productivity and ecology, inheritance and change.
